Choosing the right shed house design is the most important decision you’ll make in your build. The floor plan determines how you live, how much you spend, and how well the space works for your family. At Shed Homes, we offer 7 standard portal frame shed home designs - each one fully customisable to suit your block, your lifestyle, and your budget.
What Makes a Good Shed Home Design?
A shed home isn’t a converted tin shed. It’s a purpose-engineered Class 1A dwelling - the same building classification as any conventional house. The steel portal frame gives you something timber frames can’t: wide clear spans with no internal load-bearing walls. That means total freedom in your floor plan.
The best shed home designs take advantage of this flexibility:
- Open-plan living areas - kitchen, dining, and living in one generous space
- Separated sleeping zones - bedrooms grouped away from living areas for privacy
- Integrated garage or workshop - under the same roof line, saving on a separate shed
- Verandahs and awnings - outdoor living is essential in Australian climate
- North-facing orientation - passive solar design that reduces energy costs
Our 7 Standard Shed Home Models
Each model can be customised - adjust dimensions, move doors and windows, add rooms, or extend verandahs. These are starting points, not limitations. Visit our models page to see each design in detail.
Compact Designs (1–2 Bedroom)
Perfect for tree changers, retirees, or anyone downsizing to acreage. These designs pack smart living into a manageable footprint - lower build cost, less maintenance, and everything you need without wasted space.
- Open-plan kitchen and living
- 1–2 bedrooms with built-in robes
- Bathroom with laundry provisions
- Optional attached garage or carport
- Covered verandah for outdoor living
Family Designs (3–4 Bedroom)
Our most popular range. These designs offer the space and separation families need - generous living areas, dedicated bedrooms, and the option to include a workshop or double garage under the same roof.
- Spacious open-plan living, dining, and kitchen
- Master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in robe
- 2–3 additional bedrooms
- Main bathroom and separate toilet
- Double garage or workshop bay
- Full-width verandah front and/or rear
Large Designs (4+ Bedroom)
For families who need serious space. These designs use wider spans and deeper floor plans to create homes that rival any conventional build - at a fraction of the cost and build time.
Customising Your Design
Every Shed Homes design starts in our 3D designer. You can:
- Adjust overall dimensions (width, length, height)
- Add or remove bays
- Position doors, windows, and roller doors
- Add verandahs, awnings, and lean-tos
- Choose from 22 COLORBOND® colours for roof and walls
- See every structural component in 3D before you commit
The 3D designer shows you exactly what you’re getting - not a rough concept, but a precise model with every column, rafter, purlin, and bolt mapped. Search by part number from the bill of materials to see exactly where each piece fits.
Shed House Plans and Pricing
Kit pricing varies by design, size, wind rating, and location. Our steel frame kit includes everything for the structural shell - portal frame, cladding, roofing, doors, windows, flashings, and all engineering drawings.
What’s not in the kit price: concrete slab, insulation, internal lining, plumbing, electrical, and fitout. These are owner-managed items - and where owner builders save the most.
